Who is responsible
This website is run by Basement Experiments, based in India, which is the controller of the personal data described here (under the EU General Data Protection Regulation “GDPR”, the UK GDPR and similar laws). You can reach us about anything in this policy at hey@freejapanesewalkingtimer.com. We have not appointed a data protection officer, as we are not required to.
At a glance
- Without your consent, we use no analytics, advertising or tracking cookies. Only the storage the site needs to work (your timer settings, theme and consent choice) is kept, and only in your own browser.
- With your consent, we use Google Analytics to understand which pages and features are used. You can change your mind at any time with the Cookie settings link at the bottom of every page.
- We don’t sell your data, and we don’t show ads at the moment.
What is stored on your device
The site saves these items in your browser’s localStorage. They never leave your device and are never sent to us:
| Item | Purpose | How long |
|---|---|---|
| Timer settings | Your slow and brisk walk lengths, number of rounds, and whether chimes and vibration are on | Until you clear this site’s data |
theme |
Whether you chose light or dark mode | Until you clear this site’s data |
consent |
Your answer in the cookie banner, so we don’t ask on every page | 12 months, then we ask again |
Because these are strictly necessary to provide features you asked for, they don’t require consent (Art. 5(3) ePrivacy Directive and its national versions, such as § 25(2) TDDDG in Germany). You can delete them at any time by clearing this site’s data in your browser.
The timer’s sound, vibration and screen wake lock all run inside your browser. No audio is recorded, and nothing about your walks is sent anywhere. We don’t ask for your name, location or any health information, and there are no user accounts.
Google Analytics (only with your consent)
If you click Accept in the cookie banner, we load Google Analytics 4, a web analytics service. Until then, nothing from Google is loaded at all.
- Provider: Google Ireland Limited, Gordon House, Barrow Street, Dublin 4, Ireland, for visitors in the EEA, UK and Switzerland; Google LLC, USA, elsewhere.
- What is collected: pages you visit, how you got here (referrer), approximate location (country or city, derived from your IP address), device and browser type, screen size, language, and interactions such as starting the timer. A random identifier is stored in the cookies
_gaand_ga_<ID>(expiry: 2 years) to recognise repeat visits. According to Google, Analytics 4 does not log or store IP addresses for visitors in the EU. - What we turned off: Google signals and ad personalization, so this data is not linked to your Google account or used for advertising.
- Purpose: to see which guides and features are useful and fix what isn’t working. We only look at aggregated reports.
- Legal basis: your consent (Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR, together with Art. 5(3) ePrivacy Directive / § 25(1) TDDDG).
- Retention: Google Analytics keeps detailed event data (individual page views and interactions) for 2 months, and user-level data linked to the random identifier for 14 months. After that, only aggregated reports remain.
- Transfers outside Europe: Google may process this data in the USA. Google LLC is certified under the EU-US Data Privacy Framework (and its UK and Swiss extensions), and Google also uses the European Commission’s Standard Contractual Clauses.
Withdrawing consent: click Cookie settings at the bottom of any page and choose Reject. Analytics stops immediately and its cookies are deleted. Withdrawing doesn’t affect processing that happened before. More about how Google uses this data: How Google uses information from sites that use its services.
Hosting and delivery
The site is hosted and delivered by Cloudflare, Inc., 101 Townsend St, San Francisco, CA 94107, USA. To send you the page and protect the site against attacks, Cloudflare necessarily processes technical data from every request: your IP address, the page requested, date and time, browser and device information, and referrer. We don’t use this data to identify you, and we don’t keep server logs ourselves.
- Legal basis: our legitimate interest in delivering a secure, reliable website (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR).
- Transfers: Cloudflare may process this data in the USA. Cloudflare is certified under the EU-US Data Privacy Framework and uses Standard Contractual Clauses.
Fonts, scripts and images are served from our own domain. No third-party font or CDN services are contacted when you load a page.
When you email us
If you write to us, we receive your email address, your message and anything else you choose to include. We use it only to reply and deal with your request, based on our legitimate interest in answering you (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR). Emails are stored with our email service provider and read by us in India. We delete correspondence once your request is dealt with and it is no longer needed, normally within 12 months.
Advertising
We don’t currently show ads. To keep the timer free, we may add Google AdSense in the future. If we do, we will update this policy first and ask for your consent before any advertising cookies are used, wherever the law requires it.
Links to other sites
Links to Google Play and other sites only send data to those sites when you click them. Their own privacy policies then apply.
Your rights
Under the GDPR and UK GDPR you have the right to:
- access the personal data we hold about you (Art. 15);
- have it corrected (Art. 16) or erased (Art. 17);
- restrict its processing (Art. 18);
- receive it in a portable format (Art. 20);
- object at any time to processing based on our legitimate interests (Art. 21);
- withdraw consent at any time, with effect for the future (Art. 7(3)), using Cookie settings.
To use any of these rights, email hey@freejapanesewalkingtimer.com. As we don’t run accounts or profiles, we usually hold very little or nothing about you, but we will always answer.
You also have the right to complain to a data protection supervisory authority, in particular in the country where you live or work. For example: the data protection authority of your federal state in Germany, the CNPD in Portugal, or the ICO in the UK. A list of all EU authorities is on the European Data Protection Board website.
We don’t use automated decision-making or profiling that has legal or similarly significant effects on you. You don’t have to provide any personal data to use the timer.
Visitors outside Europe
We apply the same approach everywhere: analytics only with consent, and no selling or sharing of personal information for advertising. California residents: we do not sell or share personal information as defined by the CCPA.
Children
This site is not directed at children under 16 and does not knowingly collect their personal data. If you believe a child has sent us personal data, please contact us and we will delete it.
Our Android app
This policy covers this website only. The Vuvu: Interval Walking Timer app for Android has its own Android app privacy policy.
Changes to this policy
If we change how we process data, we will update this page and the date at the top before the change takes effect. Questions? Email hey@freejapanesewalkingtimer.com or visit our contact page. See also our terms & conditions.
